‘He’s in the Best Shape of His Life’: Trey Holly Reaches 1,000-Yard Milestone for Southern

“He’s in the best shape of his life.”

That assessment from Southern head coach Marshall Faulk speaks volumes about the transformation of running back Trey Holly.

The redshirt junior is putting together a standout 2026 campaign, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards with three regular-season games remaining.

Holly’s milestone marks a significant moment for Southern football. He is the program’s first running back to reach 1,000 rushing yards in a season since Herbert Edwards accomplished the feat in 2017.

“You have to be willing to take whatever they’re gonna give you in the first and second quarter[ because the defense], they’re gonna tackle they gonna play hard  [but] when we get to the third and fourth [quarter], you gotta buckle up because that’s where you make your money as a running back in this business. all the fancy stuff , the dressing and all of that you do that in the beginning of the game , [at] the end of the game you close it out with hard-nosed, tough  football and and Trey has responded. he’s taking care of his body and doing things necessary, so he can continue to be effective .”

The accomplishment also highlights the impact of Faulk’s approach to developing Holly. The Pro Football Hall of Fame running back has challenged Holly to improve his preparation, conditioning and attention to detail as he works toward his goal of playing professionally.

Faulk has made it clear that his expectations extend beyond producing big numbers.

Earlier in the season, the Southern coach emphasized the importance of Holly embracing the less glamorous aspects of playing running back, including fighting for tough yards when running lanes aren’t readily available.

That development appears to be paying dividends.

Holly entered the 2026 season following a productive 2025 campaign and has elevated his performance this fall. His ability to consistently move the chains and generate explosive plays has made him a centerpiece of the Jaguars’ offensive attack.

Through the team’s latest statistical reporting, Holly has recorded 1,033 rushing yards, nine rushing touchdowns and an average of 5.2 yards per carry.

With three regular-season games still on the schedule, Holly has an opportunity to add to his impressive numbers.

For Faulk, seeing Holly reach this milestone represents more than individual production. It reflects the growth of a player being pushed to maximize his potential.

And for Southern, having a 1,000-yard running back again is a milestone worth celebrating.
